A Transformational Work

I first read BHG about 8 months ago. At the time, I was going through a very dry period spiritually, and upon first completing the book, it was honestly a discouragement. I knew where I was, and knew where I wanted to be, but had no idea how to get there. In the time since, the Lord has done a supernatural work in my life that has taken me from a dry, weak, shell of a Christian to a bold and daring minister of truth. The Bravehearted Gospel was a major catalyst to this transformation, and I have kept it nearby the entire time, and have read it cover to cover at least three times since then. This book is a call to action that leaves the reader with a choice. There is no middle ground, either the reader must follow the bravehearted path, or they must reject it outright. Thank God for men like Eric who stand on the truth of Scripture, and lean not on their own understanding.

Worthwhile Message but Poorly Told

Without a doubt this is a message that the modern church needs to hear, but the book is so full of repetition (including passages copied verbatim) that it could easily have been written in less than 100 pages.
It is obvious that Mr Ludy likes hearing himself speak. Won't be reading any of his other books if this is a true example of his works

A Review of Snowed in with the Bad Boy by Sylvia Pierce

Sylvia has done it again! This may be a short book, but boy is it packed with a punch! We meet Ronan, who is a retired black ops agent, living in the middle of nowhere in Colorado. He's in the middle of a fantasy of what he would ask Santa for if he still believed in Christmas, when there's a knock on his door.

Georgie is dressed up as an elf, on her way to surprise her family for Christmas Eve when a blizzard causes her to lose control of her car and she ends up in a snowbank at the end of a driveway. She treks up to the cabin and is instantly fascinated with the man that opens the door. When she asks to use his phone, he gives her a rude answer instead of simply telling her the phone lines are down.

I don't want to give away too much about what happens, but you will definitely want to pick this one up and read it! There are no cliffhangers, but I certainly hope that we get to see more of these two in the near future!

This was a beautiful story, well written, sexy and interesting my only wish is that it was longer. I felt the story ended too soon there was more potential there for what happens after Christmas! So I feel a bit of angst that the couple got together out of sheer accident, over the course of 2 days and there is no end game to the story. Readers love happy endings or endings that go somewhere. It just dropped off.... Okay we live across the U.S. From each other but we will be together ...thanks for reading... Goodbye ...okay angst over... It is still a interesting book just has potential to be a phenomenal book!

HOLY BAD BOY HOTNESS with HEART! This is exactly the kind of book I love to read during the holidays. Not only did it have a sexy bad boy, a cozy snowed-in cabin, and SMOKING HOT SEXY SCENES, this story was also chock full of clever, laugh out loud banter and a unexpectedly sweet romance in the middle of it all. Ronan and Georgie--each with their own hidden wounds--charmed me. I fell hard for this good girl with a naughty streak and this bad boy with a heart of gold and I can't wait for more from Sylvia. She's on my watch list!

Olivia was dedicated to the memory of Strachey's friend Virginia Woolf and published to acclaim in 1949. Colette wrote the screenplay for the 1951 film adaptation of the novel. In 1999, Olivia was included on the Publishing Triangle's widely publicized list of the 100 Best Gay and Lesbian Novels of the 20th Century.

A formative experience, for both narrator and reader

"Olivia" is a "récit"---a short novel told in the first-person by someone with a story to relate or a confession to make, sometimes as observer, sometimes as protagonist. She or he concisely describes a crucial series of simple events with complex depths and resonances, capped by a catastrophe that often combines physical with emotional extremity.

The "récit" was born in France; and Dorothy Strachey Bussy (1865-1960) absorbed its tradition into her blood, as befits a translator of André Gide, to whom she was passionately attached, and whose "L'Immoraliste" personifies the genre. Written in French in 1933, "Olivia" was not rendered into English until Leonard Woolf accepted it for the Hogarth Press: it grips you from first to last.

Sent to a finishing school outside Paris well before the Great War, Olivia becomes an unwitting object of contention between the two headmistresses, Mlle Cara and her partner Mlle Julie, after the young Englishwoman contracts a crush on the latter. The gathering crisis is chronicled with an ecstatic ruthlessness, classically contained, akin to the verse dramas of Racine which Mlle Julie reads aloud to her charges with such intoxicating effect.

Strachey's astute artistry is exemplified by the moment when Mlle Cara, driven to jealous ranting, makes poisonous use (for a book published in 1949) of the designation "Jewess"---a cherry-bomb word that sends tremors through the floorboards. But a writer's severest test comes near the end of a dramatic work, when the emotional climax which concludes the main action absolutely must convince the reader of its truth. Here it is the final encounter, after Mlle Cara's illness, between Olivia and Mlle Julie: without a false note or cliché it sweeps one along with authentic, closely-observed anguish. How apt that Colette wrote the 1951 screenplay.

In her foreword, Regina Marler provides the biographical and cultural background needed to appreciate the tale even more deeply. One hopes she will rescue another mislaid classic for us to reappraise. If only more masterpieces were this "minor."

This novel by Dorothy Strachey, sister of famous biographer and eccentric, Lytton Strachey, is a little jewel of a well-written novel. Probably based on Dorothy's experiences in a girl's school, it describes a English teenager's crush on a school mistress in late 19th century France. This novel is not about sex or being a lesbian. It is about anticipation and the overwhelming need for affection and approval. It is a classic, "coming of age" novel with (for once!) a young girl instead of a young boy. Quick, enthralling read!

The Shock of the New

The brilliant Regina Marler has contributed an elegant introduction in which she very simply and directly lays out the facts about Dorothy Strachey's strange, privileged life, and dashes our hopes at once by letting us know that this is no memoir, it is that rarer more courageous thing, a novel. And yet, Marler continues, the novel possesses an emotional truth which may in fact vie closer to Strachey's own life, her needs, her accomplishments, than she in fact knew. Just as we are now familiar with Dora Carrington, the brilliant UK painter who staked her life and soul to her love for the gay author and flaneur Lytton Strachey, and who killed herself when Strackey died, we now have the example of Dorothy Strachey, who seems to have half-embroidered, half-distilled this example of pure, clear Sapphic enchantment as an offering to the man she was in love with, French novelist Andre Gide, whose translator she had become years and years earlier.

Happily she did not kill herself when Gide died, and happily the book that she wrote, "Olivia," has a punch and an emotional availability that none of Gide's works possess. So it seems today that sometimes, the lover wins out, while the loved one wraps his shroud of untouchability right into the grave of Lethe. The story of Olivia and Mlle. Julie has one of those tears guaranteed wallops at the end; not just at the end, when you're prepared for it, but at the extreme end, like the hand of Carrie reaching through the grave around Amy Irving's ankle.

Didn't reach as high as I was expecting

I am seriously struggling to complete this first novel let alone go through all this drama for another 3 books. I love the whole concept behind this story line. It is intriguing, certainly different and Pearce is not the normal Billionaire that you would expect. Rachel however... ugh she annoys the living hell out of me. Doormat material even though she wants to not be. I kind of found her to be childish and skipped through areas that just revolved around her. The couple seemed to have come together quickly and attached so fast, I am really wondering what will fill another 3 books.There were parts to the writing that I found to be flat sometimes. Like space filling. Now and then I would feel the emotion that Pearce was feeling however Rachel was like cardboard to me. I know my review is against the norm compared to others but show some respect and don't slag me. I am a heavy reader and enjoy all genres and therefore entitled to my opinion. I like to enjoy a book and not skip through. I think Ms Everhart did a good job however I feel like there could have been far more emotion placed to the story, and well just.... more.

I wanted to give it a shot though and I am glad I did

I have read the whole Jade series so I thought I check it out. At first I wasn't so sure because if you read the Jade Series you knew about Rachel and what happens. I wanted to give it a shot though and I am glad I did. At first I thought it was a bit slow but it really got good and kept me on reading and reading. I loved reading Pearce and Rachel's story. I love the way he treats her and how she treats him. I can totally see the traits Garrett got from both parents! I cannot wait for the next book! If you haven't read the Jade Series that's okay because you'll still understand it but for those of us who has it just adds to the story. Without giving out too much I hope the Pearce gets his HEA and that the author has something up her sleeve.

The Kensingtons are off to a great start!

I just discovered the Jade series a few months ago and when I was done reading them I was left so sad that I didn't have anymore to read about them, I was SO excited to find out about The Kensington series! Pearce has so many sides and it's been fun getting to know him better! I always knew I liked him! This book really shows you his struggle with his family and the organization but also the good side of him when he's with Rachel. I cannot wait to find out more about those two! And everything that happens to them. Keep those books coming Allie!
