Review of The Three-Year MATHCOUNTS Marathon
The author of this wonderful study guide for MathCounts has just completed a very successful career as a middle school mathlete (the three-year journey in the title). As the introduction makes clear, success at the national level requires hard work and a plan of attack. The author provides a plan of attack in the form of 15 chapters including mathematical principles, functional equations, angle chasing, and mass points, just to list a few. After that, it is up to the mathlete to follow through! The exposition is pitched at a fairly high level making this book appropriate for intermediate to advanced mathletes.
Since problem-solving is what MathCounts is all about, every chapter includes several important ideas. Each idea is introduced through one or more carefully chosen problems for which the author offers clear and informative solutions. Every chapter concludes with a really nice set of problems drawn from a wide range of contests, including a few from the International Mathematical Olympiad. In most cases the source of the problem is supplied, which gives a hint as to how hard it might be. The book provides answers and then solutions to all the problems. The author makes it clear that even working through all of the problems in MathCounts is not sufficient to ensure success. Nevertheless, working your way through this book would be a significant step towards success at the state and national level.
What makes this book so special is the combination of really good problems and the quality of the solutions supplied. The mathematical syntax is correct and the written explanations are well done. Each problem provides a new insight into the topic at hand and the solutions help the reader to see how the author thought through each problem. I highly recommend this book to any intermediate to advanced mathlete. It should also be on the desk of MathCounts coaches and in the library of schools that participate in MathCounts and the AMC contests. This is a wonderful book. I had lots of fun trying the problems!

A resourceful math competition book
By Leland
I received a complimentary evaluation copy of this book as I was a State coach at last year's Mathcounts National competition. I skimmed the book and then gave the book to one of my students who also went to Nationals. So this review is a combined output from both of us.
The good thing about this book is that it covers a lot of common math competition strategies. The production is also of high quality (eg I have yet to find a typo). It is very impressive for a middle school student (even a very advanced one) to write such a book. It has a decent compilation of problems from many different competitions, from Mathcounts to AMC 10/12, AIME, USAMO, etc.
On the not-so-good part, I would say the name does not reflect the content well. This book is more advanced than what are often tested in Mathcounts, esp. at the typical Chapter or State levels. My student who was also a top 56 MC National mathlete and a USAJMO qualifier still had some stuff that he did not know. I would say the mathematical principles in Chapter 1 are more suitable to USA(J)MO than to Mathcounts. Thus I am also not very sure what levels of students would this book serve the best.
Overall I like this book and think it is not only useful but also of good value. I would give it a 5*.

Great resource
By Amazon Customer
One of the difficulties we face in preparing students who have the potential to compete at the highest levels in our state Mathcounts competition on go on to Nationals is providing them new problems that can challenge them. This book provides them, along with well-written solutions. Although the problems are possibly above the heads of the average middle school math student, those who desire to be competitive will find things to guide them along the path to high levels. We plan to provide the book for our most promising sixth graders over the summer to help them grow and to use materials during the school year to supplement our teaching.
The book also provides encouragement for those young students who have promise but are overwhelmed in their first year by the highest performers. Knowing that Ms. Ge set and met a goal of going to Nationals will give them a sense that, through hard work, they can reach the goals that they set. We've been working hard as coaches to identify those students with potential and to help them see Mathcounts as a process that lasts more than a single year.

Excellent Resource
By mannyn
I have been a Mathcounts and ARML coach for 25 years and have worked through many different resources. This book is very well written and organized. So far I have not found any errors or mistakes. The text is definitely oriented for a more advanced student. It's mostly way over the head of my "average" Mathcounts students, but is fantastic for those that are very gifted and have potential at the State and National level of Mathcounts. Of course, this doesn't mean you can't use it across the board- you can, you just have to be selective. In my regular classes I routinely use problems from Mathcounts and those are more suited for an average student.
