About the Author
Allan Leighton began his career at Mars confectionery, where he rose to become group marketing director before leaving to join the loss-making ASDA supermarket chain. There he was credited with turning what he once described as a basket case into a highly successful company that was sold to Wal-Mart for £6.7 billion in 1999. When he left his position as president and chief executive of Wal-Mart Europe he famously coined the phrase "going plural" as he took on non-executive positions at a string of companies, including lastminute.com, Leeds United, BHS, BSkyB, and Selfridges. He was chairman of Royal Mail Group until 2009, and is currently non-executive director of BSkyB and George Weston, as well as deputy chairman of Selfridges & Co. His first book, On Leadership, was a bestseller when it appeared in 2007.

Tough calls - ok

I like Allan. However when the book talks about the Royal mail and changing the company, and then Barclays and how great the management are, it loses crediability. Royal mail according to their latest CEOs Report and accounts statement is loss making, the mail and pacel divisions are loss making, its main profit is from a eurpean subsidary. Barlclays has been exposed for fixing libor. And chairman and CEO have resigned.
These two incidences make me belief less in Allans tough call profiles.

The Geek's Guide to Dating

The Geek's Guide to Dating is a quick, funny, and educational journey through the world of relationships, but geek style! It uses lots of references to various aspects of pop culture, and draws parallels between them and dating, which surprisingly made a lot of sense. Thinking about finding your own Player Two as a videogame quest was actually quite helpful and put things into an easy to understand perspective. I'm a single geek and the idea of getting out there and dating is quite cumbersome, but after finishing this little guide, it seems more fun and doable.

The target audience of The Geek's Guide to Dating is straight male geeks, but I do think many of tips are applicable to women and even gay geeks (although non-geeks may be out of luck). There is a blurb within the first chapter to address "gal geeks," so that was nice, and it's true that you only need to switch around a few pronouns to make it relevant to you if you are not in fact a straight male. Although I do think this could have been better and even more helpful if the advice had been gender and sexuality neutral, with a few specific sections for women or non-straight people. Geeks come in all types!

In general, I found the advice given in The Geek's Guide to Dating to be good and organized in a logical manner (geeks love logic!). It starts with addressing yourself first, which is great, since of course, you need to know exactly what you want and have to offer in a relationship. Then it goes through how to meet a potential partner, asking them out, first date ideas, and taking it to the next level. There's also a chapter on dumping and being dumped, and how to get back out there after a failed relationship! The one section I had a problem with was on what to wear on the first date. I do agree that you should you look your best, but there were too many clothing don'ts. I think you should look presentable and wear something appropriate for the date activity, but you also need to be yourself! I was kind of annoyed that hoodies were on the do not wear list, since I literally have a closet with just hoodies in it. I'm a geek gal who loves her hoodies (zip-ups not pullovers).

The Geek's Guide to Dating was pretty great. It's packed full of a lot of straightforward advice, and I loved the use of videogame lingo to explain the different aspects of relationships. I didn't get all of the references, but I doubt many geeks will be well versed in every single game, comic, movie, and TV show out there. A lot of the tips are common sense, but I do think the way it's presented makes it feel fresh and more usable in real life.

Very fun, but male-specific

Honestly, I grabbed this book as soon as I could because the cover is AMAZING! When a friend of mine had also received a copy, I figured it would be a fun read and chat book. This does hit that mark. It is a lot of fun to talk about, but I'm not certain that it actually fits the dating advice genre for a female. This is extremely centered on a male audience and Smith admits that it will be within his introduction. With that being said, figuring out what type of Geek I am and then enjoying all of the references through the book made it worth reading. For people looking for a fun read, this is humorous and engaging. For those looking for some real Geek dating advice, I would probably continue searching.

A fun pick for geeks

I am a Geek. A proud Geek! My idea of romance is to watch Battlestar Galactica with my spouse who is a fellow geek. The book hit home at right places. It's difficult for me to laugh while reading something (come to think of it, it's difficult for me to feel any emotion while reading, I hardly get emotional in general-- Han!) But this book made me laugh at least at 3 different places.
My favorite one was definition of sex-- Sometimes things go well and you make a connection that leads to a free exchange of ideas (or DNA)
Definition of Attraction-- So once you have spotted a life form you'd like to know better
I laughed aloud when I read it.
So, yes, if you are a Geek (not a mere mortal) and want to know how your fellow species members FEEL or THINK that they are feeling and vise versa before they copulate, pick this book.

George Gordon Byron was a superb letter-writer: almost all his letters, whatever the subject or whoever the recipient, are enlivened by his wit, his irony, his honesty, and the sharpness of his observation of people. In addition, they offer a mirror of his own time. This first collected edition of all Byron’s known letters supersedes Prothero’s incomplete edition at the turn of the century. It includes a considerable number of hitherto unpublished letters and the complete text of many that were bowdlerized by former editors for a variety of reasons. Prothero’s edition included 1,198 letters. This edition has more than 3,000, over 80 percent of them transcribed entirely from the original manuscripts.
In the fifth installment of this marvelous serial story, we read about Byron’s separation from his wife. Besides his pleading letters to Annabella asking her to reconsider, there are level-headed letters to Murray and Hobhouse and Hunt and Rogers―all written during the tempestuous time before his final departure from England. The accounts written during the ensuing summer, of Waterloo and the Rhine and Switzerland, reveal new depths of Byron’s maturing mind. But the very best letters here are the ones from Italy: freed from the inhibitions of English society, Byron’s spirit seems to expand and his letters reflect the joie de vivre that, despite his melancholy, was an inherent part of his character.

The late Leslie A. Marchand was Professor of English, Emeritus, Rutgers University. For his lifelong work on Byron, he was given the National Book Critics Circle's Ivan Sandrof Award.

After a series of largely unfortunate events brings handsome PD (you’ll learn what it means when you read the book) paramedic Reid into Kara’s life, Kara doubts her ability to be a good mother, knows Reid strongly disapproves of her, and in general wonders about the course of her life. Kara is frantically busy at work, but earns a good living, allowing her and Nadia to live comfortably. She is also ever mindful of Nadia’s father, Steve, who dumped Kara after learning she was pregnant and probably still doesn’t even know he has a daughter.

Reid has some unfortunate and painful history of his own, causing him to put up a wall between himself and anyone with any ability to get close – and that goes doubly so for anyone with a sweet little girl.

Throughout the book, the reader feels the ups and downs of Kara and Reid’s lives as individuals and when together, especially when Nadia's father re-enters the picture. Even though I did not agree with some of the child raising attitudes expressed by characters in the book, overall I did not feel that it significantly detracted from the basic story, which I loved. I had not read the prior book in the series by the same author that was about Kara’s sister, but I do intend to. This is a stand-alone book that I easily understood and related to, although I would guess it would feel richer and be even more engaging had I been familiar with the characters and their earlier stories. In summary, I do recommend this book as an engaging, entertaining, and reasonably quick and easy read, although there are a few inconsistencies in the storyline and wording. As I have an ARC, it is not clear to me whether these will be corrected before the final version is released. Even with the few problems, I would still recommend as it is a story that I would not have wanted to miss.

I loved this story

I had so much fun with this book. I smiled, I laughed and just really enjoyed reading "His Touch" the first in the Summer in New York Series. Patty Blout just made this such an easy and lovely read that I am looking forward to His Kiss and His Love and really hope that the authors that wrote them make me fall in love with their characters too.

I love reading quick, summer reads especially when the the leading man happens to be a hot paramedic with FDNY. **swoon** Mix that with his scruffy attitude and precious little girl and you have me hooked. And, believe me, Reid was one hot male. He may have had some hardships and wore them on his sleeve but, he turned out to be just was the doctor ordered for Kara.

Kara was a strong-willed, loving women. Even though she had a hard past, she stood up on her own two feet and made a life for her and her daughter. She may have had some "woe-is-me" times but they were well deserved. Enter Reid and her life becomes totally complicated. Then bring in the ex with some horrifying news and Reid becomes her rock.

Together, they save each other. Kara makes Reid take a good look at his life and face the past and his grief. Reid lets Kara know that she doesn't have to go through life alone.

I loved this story. Patty Blount made you feel for both of the main characters in the book and she surrounded them with loving, fun friends that would do anything for the other, especially in times of need. She moved the story along and didn't drag out anything that would have had you wondering when she was going to get to the point. Reid was handsome, strong and vulnerable. Kara was loving, caring and fragile. Put them together and you had an HEA that was touching and beautiful.

An enjoyable romantic read...

If you are looking for a short but sweet, well-written, heart touching romantic tale, you might want to consider His Touch (Book 1 of Summer in New York series) by Patty Blount. Handsome NYFD paramedic, Reid Bennett, is used to rushing in and saving lives. However, it is his heart that ultimately gets rescued by single mom, Kara Larsen, and her toddler, Nadia. Reid has never gotten over the tragic death of his little girl, Erin, when he keeps running into Kara. Nadia reminds him so much of his loss, in his anguish, he is always seems to be lashing out at Kara. With a backdrop of memories of loved ones lost on 9/11, a great cast of believable secondary characters, this emotion packed story unfolds with angst-filled twists and turns. If my research is correct, “The Christmas in New York” series is based on the love stories of Nadia’s friends and sister. This reviewer would definitely like to read all the books in both series. Please note each book appears to have a different author.
