Good basic algebra review

I bought this book for a middle school child (8th grade) and decided to do some reviewing as well. I found Algebra Know-It-All to be straight forward and simple to understand. I liked the fact that concepts were introduced, built upon, and then added into the overall material. I was also glad to see that the text was conversational and began simply without giving the feeling that the student was being dropped into the deep end of the pool from the start. I especially like the author's encouraging words to the student throughout the book. Definitely worth the money.

Fantastic reference

This is great for brushing up on algebra, I bought it for my 13 year old, but I've been reading it as well as I work through the chapters with him.

I particularly enjoyed the opening chapters on number and set theory.

The narrative is explanatory, not didactic, and the problems are actually thought provoking and challenging, not just the typical "solve 31 random math problems" approach. The "here's a challenge!" sections are actually challenging and educational, they really make you think about the subject matter, not just memorizing rules and applying them to a series of problems.

Stan takes the same approach to education that Sal Khan does on khanacademy - education and explanation, not rote memorization. The ability to do this in book form, rather than interactive video, is impressive.

There is a 1 star review on here that discusses an error in the order of operations section. Regarding that review:
1) All books have errata, the proper response is to point the error out and help get it corrected. Posting a public 1 star review for discovering a single error in a math book strikes me as being a knee-jerk reaction, and without merit.
2) The version of the book that I have doesn't even contain that error any more, so clearly the author and publisher took the issue seriously and got it corrected quickly.

While it has been a few years since that review was written, I do think it would be appropriate for the reviewer to update the rating, since (even in the version containing the error) the book clearly doesn't deserve a single star. At this point, that negative review speaks more clearly about the reviewer than it does the book.

I sincerely hope that the math teacher who wrote that review doesn't bring a similar level of over-reaction into the classroom.

Excellent Course or Reference Book!

I bought this book for my 13yr old son who is taking his first course in Algebra this 09-10 school yr. This book is excellent for shy students who do not want to call a lot of attention to themselves in class. No matter what the teacher is teaching about Algebra, there is usually a better explanation in Stan's book.

I have been buying Stan's books for over 15 years, on many different technical subjects. I have never been disappointed! His books are always a great buy for the present and future reference!

Great gift for an outdoorsman

I gave this to my best friend for Christmas. He said, "This Lost Arts book you got is fantastic. It's a little archaic, but most of my favorite gear is from the time it was written, as well as my favorite techniques, so it works. And the writing is really fun old formal script". He's pretty picky about books and not one to describe things as fantastic or fun very often so it must be pretty amazing. He's 34 and fairly old school when it comes to most everything outdoor related so it worked. I don't think someone who is looking for new/improved/latest & greatest would glean much.

Just an FYI - Some of the hunting techniques (ie, some types of trapping) and chemicals (because they can be used for bombs) referenced in the book are now illegal and some of the equipment is not readily available.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, like others, found myself simultaneously entranced and infuriated by Sutter Keely. Sutter is, for all of his faults,a likable person, but the world is moving past him while he's standing still: his best friend Ricky is moving past all of their partying and wild times and into a serious romantic relationship; the other students at school are looking past the "now" and into the future of college and work; even Sutter's own family is moving on in their own ways, while Sutter deludes himself that the Spectacular Now is enough for him.

"Voice" in YA novels is everything, and this novel certainly has that: Sutter Keely is a very familiar character (we all remember "that guy" from high school) and yet is uniquely his own person.

Highly recommended for both teens and adults: this novel is by turns warm, witty, wise, and heartbreaking.

Oh, and one more time: REMOVE THE SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW OR ELSE WARN THAT IT SPOILS THE ENDING.

Not Spectacular at all

There were parts of this story that made me laugh out loud, but I was let down by the ending. There was no redemption for the characters, they didn't grow or change or improve their lives in any way. It just sort of ended. I was left feeling terribly for the characters, angry that one character had been dragged down into the drunkenness of the main character, disappointed that they couldn't rise above their issues. I don't need a happily ever after, but this bleak end to the story left me wondering why anyone would bother making this into a movie.

Good, and tough story...

Really good, and brutal story: The movie is a travesty in that there is almost no connection between the actual characters as described and this book. On the other hand, that made it easy to read, because I forgot that I saw the movie first, a page into reading because of the differences.

About the Author
Clint Archer is a graduate of the Master's Seminary, and holds degrees in divinity, theology as well as the Doctorate in expository preaching. In 2005 he became the preaching pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church in South Africa, where he currently ministers. Clint is an enthusiastic blogger, and has a passion for short-term missions. He has taught the doctrine of eternal rewards at churches, seminaries, and conferences in eight countries. He and his wife, Kim, have three children and a dog named Spurgeon.

Captivating read - great Biblical challange to personal godliness

This is an absolute MUST read......Archer's style is as always thoroughly captivating, there is not one dull paragraph in this book! The Biblical challenge from this book to personal godliness in the light of the bema seat is probably the biggest single challenge I have ever faced in my Christian walk. It has impacted on every decision as I now consider all my thoughts and actions in the light of Christ's scrutiny and eternal rewards as I have never done before. While I was previously satisfied to rest on my full justification and lack of condemnation through the cross, I am now fully persuaded of the need for so much more as a child of God. The desire to live every public and private moment for His glory has been greatly increased since reading this book. It is of tremendous comfort to those who labour tirelessly and unnoticed and of great challenge to those who, like me, are way too concerned with earthly rewards. Be warned - it will change your life!

Must read for pastor's and laymen alike!

The Preacher's Payday is a basic examination of the eteranal rewards that will be handed out from the Bema seat at the Final judgment, and the author gives particular attention to the judgment of Bible teachers and pastors, who, as he shows from Scripture, will experience a stricter judgement but potentially greater reward. As a layman, I found this book to be encouraging and convicting. Archer has a tremendous ability with words and shows great skill with the use of word pictures. Clint also links faithfulness to the Scripture with expository preaching and spends the last few chapters giving a basic introdution to what expository preaching is and how to do it. For those who are not familiar with expository preaching you will find these chapters helpful as they deal with some of the basics. For pastors who already exposite Scripture, you will find this to be a useful refresher and may even glean some ideas from Clint. The author has done a great service by providing a select bibliography at the end of the book which takes up a little over four pages. I fully recommend this book to pastors and laymen alike, those who teach and those who don't. As Clint mentions, there is much confusion over the Bema seat, mainly because there has been little written about it. This book is an excellent primer on the subject, but it's main purpose is to encourage pastors and elders in faithfulness to Christ.
