If you let this book show you what's actually real, you will be free

I've been searching for a long time, even not knowing myself that I was searching. I always had the feeling that something wasn't right here. When I was young I thought the answer was in science, but I soon found that even in science a lot of assumptions are made and worst of all, consciousness is not really studied because it is an intimate experience that cannot be scientifically - that is objectively - looked at. For a while I was desperate, ignoring spirituality, thinking it would just be more bogus. Crystal balls and card reading. Then I discovered that actually science HAD confirmed some physical effects on the brain from meditation. That got me interested, and I soon found myself meditating and reading about buddhism, listening to Alan Watts and the likes. Still, it was all a bit elusive and vague to me. It felt more like entertainment. I read about enlightenment and got to thinking about reality, connectedness, non-duality. I listened to hours and hours of Buddha at the Gaspump interviews, Francis Lucille, Rupert Spira, and Mooji (Youtube). That slowly got me somewhere, but still I could not see what they were actually pointing at.

That is exactly what this book made clear to me. Now, in retrospect, I actually understand what all those people were referring to, what they were trying to say. This book breaks down all of our assumptions, and confronts us with not a reality as we think it is or how we were taught it is, but a reality that is actually there, the one that we can very easily observe but have simply learned to ignore or look at differently. That at the same time can make it hard sometimes to see that simple undeniable reality of things. But when you try, with an open mind, willing to see what is being taught, you will eventually disprove all of your own "I don't get it's" and contradictory evidence you think you have or know of. Let go of yourself and everything you have accumulated over the course of your life, and rebuild your reality with this book. You will be free.

The "must have" Non-Dual book!

I actually paid $30 dollars for this book when it first came out, and I don't regret it for an instant. This is the best book I have read in years. I have spent the last 10 years reading books on the Enlightenment/non-duality subject, and I have only ever encountered a book like this once before (Greg Goode's "The Direct Path"). Goran's book does away with all concepts and the non-sense that gets us trapped in spiritual seeking. It goes straight to the heart of what is really going on, what is True.

Very simply, this is a book for a person who is looking to wake up to the state of Enlightenment as fast as possible. This is the book for a person who is ready to be done.

I am incredibly grateful to Goran for writing this book! I recommended it wholeheartedly when it cost $30, it is a steal at its current price.

Some powerful ideas inside

It's a pretty good book, although very short. The first 2 chapters are really just preparation for the main body of the text - the 3rd and 4th chapters.

The ideas expressed here are somewhat new and expressed in an original way. Like most folks in this scene, I've read plenty of books on enlightenment and liberation, but some of the views shared here stroke me as fresh and quite innovative.

If read carefully (and at least a few times), the insight can dawn that really there is no possibility of existing such a thing as an external world - the structure for it to exist simply is not there.

Well-written and Useful

Nevis' book is thorough look at how Gestalt principles affect organizational consulting. I have not been a student of Gestalt ideas and methods since graduate school in a former life. Nevertheless it provides very good handles and tools for helping organizations learn what they need and to learn ways of acting in the future on their own.

Powerful stuff, Well presented

Gestalt theory is wide and deep, often conceptually slippery, and difficult to grasp, but it can impact one's life and work in profound and lasting ways. Nevis is certainly one of the masters at applying Gestalt in organizations and this is (so far) his masterwork on the subject. I truly believe that you will benefit from reading this book if you do so reflectively and let it do its "magic" on you.

That said, Gestalt is highly experiential and needs to be learned through the hands, mouth, ears, and eyes. If this book piques your interest, I hope that is only the beginning of your inquiry. A very good next step will be hands-on training.

I red this book as it had appeared as a reference in many articles about Gestalt Coaching, which was subject of my study. Altought the book was written 25 years ago and considerd gestalt approach within systems, more that in the individual work, I have found this book very practical, exciting and insightful for my thoughts on gestalt approach in coaching.

About the Author
Kevin M. Schultz teaches American history at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), one of the most diverse campuses in the country. He has special interests in religion, ethnic and racial history, and American intellectual and cultural life. He is currently president of the Society for U.S. Intellectual History and is the author of several books. His most recent, BUCKLEY AND MAILER: THE DIFFICULT FRIENDSHIP THAT SHAPED THE SIXTIES (W.W. Norton & Co.), came out in 2015 and was reviewed widely, including in The New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal, and dozens more venues. His TRI-FAITH AMERICA: HOW POSTWAR CATHOLICS AND JEWS HELPED AMERICA REALIZE ITS PROTESTANT PROMISE was published by Oxford University Press in 2011 and is now in paperback, and his essays have appeared in THE JOURNAL OF AMERICAN HISTORY, AMERICAN QUARTERLY, THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF RELIGION, LABOR HISTORY, and several other venues, popular and academic alike. I ordered this because I used the Psych book from the same publisher and felt it was very user friendly. This one is a similar set up and has chapter reviews in the back as well. It was much cheaper to order 3 than 4 and I liked that this one included volume 1 and 2 together.

Probably the best book about the history of gaming

Of all the things that was wonderful about this book, for all that's said about the video game industry being so young. there's tons of history and changes that didn't happen overnight. From the 50s to now, it was fascinating to see how most of video games started from the idea of fun and play. It never started with one person, but it was amazing to read about those 'one person' people who made big imprints to the industry we know and whine about today! I was able to learn about the video game craze in 1980s Europe and discovering a huge chunk of that history goes woefully unreported and barely register a blips. It was nice to know that it wasn't 'all Nintendo, all the time'.

Nearly every sector gets a writeup that comes from a writer who gives it the utmost respect the people and their creations deserve. Consoles, PCs, handhelds, smartphones, arcades, indies, big publishers, DLC, free to play: for as brief (it's in the title) as the coverage a lot of these sectors get, they hold a bunch of impact and may even jog some warm memories about those days.

Coming at a time when the industry has lost one of its biggest icons (Satoru Iwata), it was great not to just remember the works we have been giving, but the people who helped shaped it and make it happen.

Ok, but better options available

Not really a "history," more a summary of video gaming's past highlights written in a weird train-of-thought style, with lots of editorializing from the author. Caught a few factual errors, and the book doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Bad layout/graphic design, areas of the page too dense right next to a bunch of wasted blank space. There are far better options for purchase here on Amazon.

Printed so small and terribly tight margins - impossible to read.

This review isn't about the content - its about the way the book is published. Its small pages with small type and fairly thick. The type runs so close to the inside margins that you have to pry the book apart and still cant comfortably read it. While the subject and the writing seem to be reasonable from what I can read - its too uncomfortable to even try to read the rest.

One word sums my opinion about this book- awesome! I currently own this one and the course companion by Andrew Allott and I have to say this book is so much better. The first thing I like about this book is that the diagrams are in colour... Secondly, when explaining a process, the book gives both a flow diagram of the process and sentence descriptions. There is masses of information that is all very useful and easy enough to understand... Diagrams in the book are also very helpful for helping to explain some trickier things like The Krebs Cycle. About the Author

Setting scenes.

One of the books I was interested in having a look at from Michael Wiese Productions was this one, ‘Master Shots Vol. 3’. I did wonder when it arrived whether I should have seen the earlier two volumes first, but each book is very much a standalone, dealing with how to get the best use of a scene in the film camera. This volume points out how to get the most out of a scene. Christopher Kenworthy obviously targets the film director but the techniques shown can also be useful for the comicbook artist and even has a knock-on effect for the prose writer because it helps visualise the scene you want to describe.
The biggest surprise was seeing so many SF sourced films being used, including ‘Blade Runner’, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ and ‘Star Wars’, although there are others like ‘War Horse’ and ‘Leon: The Professional’ as well. All of these are used to highlight the 100 examples that Kenworthy uses to make various points varying from actor or camera movement within a scene and to make the action interesting.
I found it very much an eye-opener and have already begun to wonder how it will affect my film watching for this kind of detail, especially as the pros themselves have these books for reference in their own collections.
It would have been interesting to see examples of where it doesn’t work as well as a contrast but then I’ve frequently said that of such books because you become mindful of what mistakes not to make.
In some respects, I found this book a fast read, however it isn’t really designed to bog you down with words because what you really want from this book is how to set up your scenes and even get the best performance from the cast involved. I suspect if you found this book useful, you’ll also pick up the earlier two volumes as well.

Picture This!

Back when I was 10 and forced to endure a week of Girl Scout camp in the Pacific Northwest (for parental reasons that, frankly, still escape me), I recall a gaggle of us trekking into the woods on a quest for blackberries. “Do you think we’ll get lost?” one of my friends nervously asked. “No way!” I replied, proudly informing them that, “I have a compass!” It was new. It was shiny. It even had the official Girl Scout trefoil stamped on the back as testament to its authenticity.

The fact I had absolutely no clue how it was supposed to work – never having read the instructions which came in the box – was a moot point. Somehow, I thought, if (1) darkness fell in the forest, (2) bears started chasing us or (3) we came upon a strange village where no one spoke English, all I had to do was flip open the lid and it would magically tell me what turns to take in order to get us safely back to camp.

Technology, of course, has given us tools far more advanced than the humble compass. Movie cameras, for instance. Yet how often do the uninitiated fall into the trap of thinking that if they just point it at something, it will always yield picture-perfect results worthy of the finest cinematography? For aspiring filmmakers of any age, "Master Shots, Volume 3" by Christopher Kenworthy is a must-have title for their resource library.

The book isn't just a treasure trove of black and white images from a diverse range of films but also offers detailed explanations on how specific framing, distance, lighting and angle work in concert to deliver symbolism, rich textures and move the story forward. Many of the frame grabs are accompanied by diagrams with black arrows indicating the movement of the actor(s) and white arrows corresponding to the movement of the camera. As the reader moves through the chapters, the diagrams taper off - a clever device for the readers to figure out the respective movements on their own and, thus, be able to apply them to their own projects.

I especially like the author's quote, "If you shoot a great actor in an average way, the result is disappointing. If you shoot an exquisite set without innovation, the money's been thrown away. If you shoot a wonderful story with traditional setups, the result will be boring." While "Master Shots" is targeted to filmmakers, there are a number of concepts that can have just as significant impact on readers whose medium of expression is a basic digital camera coupled with photo editing software. Kenworthy's passion for his craft is evident on every page and the takeaway value for future movie directors is a better understanding of the look, energy and emotion they want their scenes to achieve before the cameras ever start rolling.

I read Volume 3, and liked it so much that I ordered Volumes 1 and 2. I think there is a wealth of practical information, and these books are both educational and a good resource. Even seasoned directors and DPs can benefit from these books by seeing shots they may have forgotten about, or not considered.

My only complaint is the design layout. The book's type is unnecessarily HUGE, the illustrations are dark and sometimes poorly rendered. There is a massive amount of wasted space. The worst part of the layout is that the wiiiiiiiiiide book format is awkward to hold while reading. I really dislike this format, and wish the book was more compact. If the series of books were in a traditional format, they would be something I could bring with me to shoots, but the size is just too cumbersome to deal with.

My gripes aside, I highly recommend the entire series of these books.
